• The pump runs constantly, even in dry weather. That can be a stuck float switch, a failing check valve letting water fall back into the pit, or a pump that has lost capacity and can no longer empty the pit in one cycle.
• Loud grinding, rattling, or a hum with no pumping. Motors and impellers wear out. A hum without discharge usually means the motor runs but the impeller no longer moves water.

Sump pump replacement is close to flat-rate work, with defined add-ons. The logic:

• Base replacement covers removing the old pump, installing a properly sized primary pump, a new check valve, and testing through several full cycles. Pump capacity (typically one-third to three-quarter horsepower classes) moves the base price.
• Add-ons priced separately: replacing corroded or undersized discharge pipe, adding a dedicated pit lid, correcting the exterior discharge point so water does not return to the foundation, and battery backup systems.
• What changes the price: pit condition and size, discharge run length and routing, and whether the electrical outlet serving the pump is suitable (a OCILB-licensed electrical partner is needed if it is not, and we will tell you rather than work around it).

Battery backup: the honest version

A primary pump replacement protects you from pump failure. It does nothing for power failure, and Central Ohio’s hardest rains arrive with the storms most likely to knock out power. A battery backup pump is a second, independent pump in the same pit that runs on a charged battery when the outlet goes dead.

Who genuinely needs one: finished basements, homes that have flooded before, homes with high water tables, and anyone who travels. Who can reasonably skip it: an unfinished basement that stays dry except in extreme events. We will tell you which case you are, and we do not commission-pressure the upsell. Battery systems have real limits: run time depends on battery size and how often the pump cycles, and batteries need replacement every few years. Why sump pumps work so hard in Central Ohio

Central Ohio sits on dense clay soil, and clay is the reason your pump exists. Water moving through clay drains slowly, so after a heavy rain the soil around your foundation stays saturated for days, feeding water toward the drain tile and into your pit long after the sky clears.
