How pricing works

French Drain Excavation is priced per linear foot, with the site and the surrounding project setting the rate. What moves the number:

• Trench length and depth. Deeper runs required by a larger project’s grading or utility conflicts cost more per foot than a shallow drainage trench.
• Sequencing with other excavation. When the drain trench shares a dig with utility work or site excavation already underway, some efficiency is possible, but coordinating depths and clearances between the drain and other buried lines adds planning work.
• Digging conditions. Rock, dense clay, mature tree roots, and tight access all add labor, the same way they would on any excavation trench.
• Discharge and tie-in requirements. Where the drain needs to tie into an existing storm line, daylight at a slope, or a dry well already part of the larger project, that connection is priced as its own line item.
• Restoration level. Backfill and rough grade are standard; full restoration is coordinated with whatever restoration scope the larger excavation project already includes.

Older Central Ohio properties occasionally turn up more than expected once a trench opens: old buried debris, an abandoned fuel oil tank, or fill soil that looks different from the surrounding ground. Transit & Flow does not perform hazardous material remediation or asbestos or lead abatement. If excavation uncovers a suspected contamination issue, we stop work in that section, document it with photos, and refer the finding to a separately qualified environmental or remediation specialist before continuing.

Excavation for drainage in Central Ohio

Central Ohio’s dense clay soil is the reason drainage trenching so often becomes part of a bigger excavation project rather than a standalone weekend job. Once a crew is already opening ground for a utility tap or a larger site dig in Franklin or Delaware County’s heavy clay, adding a drainage trench along the way is often more efficient than mobilizing separately, especially where the drain needs to run deeper than a typical yard installation to clear other buried lines.

Older neighborhoods add real texture to this work. Lots in Clintonville, the Hilltop, and Whitehall were built up over close to a century, and a trench dug there for a bigger project can cross old clay tile drain lines, abandoned utility stubs, or fill material nobody has records for. Newer developments in Dublin, New Albany, and Lewis Center have more predictable subsurface conditions, but compacted clay from construction-era regrading can still mean a drainage run needs to go deeper than expected. Either way, this is trenching work best planned alongside whatever other excavation is already scoped for the site, not treated as an afterthought.
