Wall Preparation in Columbus and Central Ohio
A paint job is only as good as the wall underneath it. Transit & Flow Group’s wall preparation service is the process we use to take a wall from rough and marked up to genuinely ready for paint: patching, sanding, spot priming, and a final check for a uniform surface before the first coat of color goes on. Build a preliminary online estimate, or call (614) 382-0000 to talk through your walls before we schedule paint.

Is this the right service for you?
Wall preparation is the right fit when:
- Walls have a scattering of small dings, nail holes, scuffs, and hairline cracks ahead of a repaint
- Old paint is glossy, flat, or peeling in spots and needs to be sanded or scuffed so new paint bonds properly
- Wallpaper was recently removed and the wall underneath needs patching, skim coating, and priming before paint
- Walls show uneven sheen or patchwork from old touch-ups and need one consistent surface
- You’re repainting after a renovation and seams, corners, or fastener heads along drywall need attention before color goes on
- You want prep work bundled cleanly into a painting project instead of handled as a separate afterthought
It helps to know what wall preparation is not. It is not a single structural patch job, and it is not the same thing as our Drywall Patching or Drywall Repair services, which address one specific hole, dent, or damaged section as their own scope of work. Wall preparation is the broader, multi-step process bundled ahead of a paint job: multiple small imperfections addressed together, sanded to a consistent texture, and primed as one coordinated pass across the whole wall or room, not a single patch treated in isolation. If your wall has one nail hole, ding, or a section needing a cutout patch, those drywall pages are the better starting point; if you’re getting a room, hallway, or whole interior ready to paint and need every wall brought to a uniform, paint-ready state, that’s this page. If wallpaper needs to come down first, our wallpaper removal service is the common first step, since old paper often leaves adhesive residue and surface damage that wall preparation then addresses before priming.
How pricing works
Wall preparation is scope-based pricing, driven by how much surface area needs attention and how much of that area is genuine imperfection versus straightforward sanding and priming. The logic:
- Area and imperfection count. A room with a handful of nail holes and light scuffing is a smaller job than a hallway coming out from under old wallpaper with adhesive residue and uneven texture across every wall.
- Surface condition underneath. Multiple layers of old paint, glossy finishes that need to be de-glossed, or a wall left rough after wallpaper removal all add prep time before priming can happen.
- Priming approach. Spot priming over patched areas is quicker than a full coat across an entire wall, and we’ll tell you which your walls need once we see them.
- Bundling with painting. Most households pair wall preparation directly with a painting project, and pricing it together often works out more efficiently than scheduling prep and paint as two separate visits.
As general market context, not a Transit & Flow Group quote, HomeAdvisor’s 2025 data on drywall and wall repair puts typical project costs between $295 and $927, averaging around $611, with small holes and hairline cracks running toward the lower end and more extensive patching pushing higher. Full wall preparation scope varies with how much of that work is needed across how many walls. Enter your project details and photos in the Estimate Builder for a preliminary online estimate. Final scope and price subject to verification on site.
What’s included
- Patching of nail holes, small dings, scuffs, and hairline cracks across the walls in scope
- Sanding for a smooth, consistent texture, including de-glossing old paint where needed
- Spot priming over patched areas, or a full prime coat where the surface calls for it
- Dust control and a clean surface handed off ready for paint
- Identification of any deeper issues, like active moisture or larger structural damage, flagged before painting begins
- All workmanship is backed by a 1-year labor warranty on labor, parts, and equipment covered per manufacturer terms.
What’s not included
- Structural drywall repair, such as replacing a damaged section or patching a hole or dent; see our Drywall Patching and Drywall Repair services for that scope
- Wallpaper removal itself, a separate service that typically happens before wall preparation begins
- The painting work itself, priced and scheduled as its own project, often bundled with prep
- Mold remediation or moisture source repair; wall preparation addresses the visible surface, not underlying water intrusion
Why this matters for Central Ohio households
Central Ohio’s older housing stock, especially in neighborhoods like Clintonville, German Village, and Bexley, tends to carry decades of paint layers, old wallpaper adhesive, and plaster or drywall patch jobs from prior owners, all of which show up as texture and sheen inconsistencies once a repaint is on the calendar. Homes going through a renovation in growing suburbs like Dublin, Powell, and New Albany often need prep work around new drywall seams and fresh construction dust before a finish coat can go on evenly. Ohio’s seasonal humidity swings also mean walls can pick up minor hairline cracking as framing shifts slightly with the weather, a normal, cosmetic issue that prep work addresses as part of a routine repaint rather than something to be alarmed about.
Our process
- Describe your walls online. Room count, condition, and photos go into the Estimate Builder for a preliminary online estimate.
- On-site walkthrough. We assess surface condition, prior paint layers, and any repairs needed before pricing the full scope.
- Patch and sand. Imperfections are filled, sanded smooth, and dust is controlled throughout.
- Prime. Patched areas or full walls are primed as the surface requires.
- Final check. We walk the prepped walls with you before paint begins, so you see the surface your color will go on top of.
Services completed by appropriately qualified professionals where required.
