Is this what you’re seeing?

Erosion problems tend to look like this:

  • Visible channels or rills cut into a slope after rain, deeper each storm.
  • Exposed tree roots or a shrinking mulch bed on a hillside where soil has visibly washed away.
  • Bare, compacted dirt where grass will not establish on a slope, often because seed keeps washing off before it roots.
  • Soil or mulch collecting at the bottom of a slope or along a driveway edge after every storm.
  • A retaining wall, if you have one, that is bulging, leaning, or has soil escaping beneath it.
  • A slope near a downspout outlet or a drainage system’s exit point that erodes faster than the rest of the yard.

That last item is common enough to call out directly: if your erosion is happening right where a French drain, dry well, or downspout discharges, the erosion is a symptom of a drainage design problem, and fixing the outlet (see French Drain Installation and Dry Well Installation) may matter as much as stabilizing the slope itself.

Erosion control or drainage grading: what’s the difference?

These two get bundled into the same conversation often enough that it’s worth being direct about the distinction. Drainage grading (see our Drainage Grading page) corrects the slope of the ground so water flows away from the house by gravity. Erosion control stabilizes soil and slopes so they physically stay in place under the force of moving water, regardless of which direction that water is headed. A yard can have correct grading and still erode on a steep bank; a yard can have serious erosion and still need regrading before the erosion fix will hold long-term. In practice we often recommend both together, addressing the grading first where it’s the root cause, then stabilizing the slope itself, but they are priced and scoped as distinct work.

How pricing works

Erosion control is priced as a range because the right method varies enormously by slope and severity. What sets the number:

  • Method. Ground cover and erosion-control fabric or matting on a mild slope costs far less than a retaining wall on a steep or actively failing bank.
  • Slope severity and length. A short, gentle slope stabilizes faster and cheaper than a long, steep one.
  • Soil condition. Already-eroded channels sometimes need regrading or fill before stabilization can even begin.
  • Materials. Options range from biodegradable erosion matting and native ground cover plantings to segmental block or timber retaining walls, each a different price tier.
  • Access. Slopes reachable by equipment cost less to stabilize than steep or wooded banks requiring hand labor.

According to Angi’s 2026 cost data, a typical residential retaining wall, one common erosion control method, runs $1,000 to $10,000 depending on material and size, averaging around $5,500. That figure is general market context, not a Transit & Flow quote, since erosion control scope varies enormously by method and site, and lighter fixes like matting and ground cover often cost significantly less than a wall.

Why Central Ohio slopes erode

Central Ohio’s clay soil barely absorbs water, so on a slope, rain that cannot soak in runs across the surface instead, carrying loose soil with it. Heavy spring rain arrives in short, hard bursts that hit bare or thinly-grassed slopes the hardest, since there is no root structure yet to hold soil in place. Freeze-thaw winters compound it: the freeze-thaw cycle loosens soil structure at the surface each winter, leaving it easier to wash away the following spring, which is often why erosion channels seem to reappear or deepen year over year even on slopes that were graded correctly to begin with.

Newer subdivisions carry a specific version of this problem. In developments like Lewis Center, Dublin, and New Albany, construction regrading compacted the clay subsoil and often left slopes with thin topsoil and young sod that has not yet developed the root mass to resist erosion. These slopes look fine the first year or two, then start showing channels once a few hard storms hit them before the grass has fully established. Stabilizing these slopes early, before erosion cuts deep channels, is generally the cheaper and more effective path.
